Workshop Date & Time

SIDRA SOLUTIONS offers the following SIDRA INTERSECTION workshop:

Two-Day Training Workshop

4 - 5 May 2017

8:30am - 4:30pm

This workshop is being conducted prior to the 5th International Conference on Roundabouts in Green Bay, WI during 8-10 May 2017. SIDRA SOLUTIONS is a Gold Level Patron of the 5th International Conference on Roundabouts.

Workshop Information

The analysis of alternative intersection treatments and modeling of closely-spaced intersection networks requires knowledge of different intersection types (roundabouts, traffic signals, sign control) as well as pedestrian crossings. In responding to this need, the objective of this workshop is to provide training to increase the expertise of North American users of SIDRA INTERSECTION beyond the use of the software for roundabout analysis only.

The workshop combines hands-on sessions and instructions to teach participants how to effectively use SIDRA INTERSECTION for roundabout analysis, signal capacity and timing analysis and lane-based network modeling using different intersection types and movement classes, and how to apply and interpret results from the model to solve intersection and network problems.

This workshop is set for US users with examples based on the SIDRA HCM (Customary) software setup of SIDRA INTERSECTION. The latest SIDRA INTERSECTION Version 7 with the HCM 6 roundabout capacity model will be used in this workshop.

The workshop is offered for new and existing users of SIDRA INTERSECTION. At the start of the workshop, new users will be accommodated with an introductory session, and existing users will be familiarized with new features of SIDRA INTERSECTION Version 7 user interface.

Recent versions of SIDRA INTERSECTION introduced the biggest changes in the 30-year history of the software. A detailed list of major new features of SIDRA INTERSECTION can be found on the SIDRA SOLUTIONS website. This workshop aims to improve your skills in using SIDRA INTERSECTION in general, and your understanding of the extensive new features of the lane-based SIDRA Network Model in particular.

Read our About Workshops page for more general information.

  • A basic level of knowledge of the use of SIDRA INTERSECTION Version 7.0, 6.1 or 6.0 will be an advantage.
  • A good level of familiarity with traffic engineering concepts and terminology.

Workshop Objectives

Upon completion of this SIDRA INTERSECTION Two-Day Training Workshop, participants will:

  • gain a knowledge of the new features of SIDRA INTERSECTION 7;
  • gain an improved general knowledge of the capabilities of SIDRA INTERSECTION for capacity, signal timing, performance and level of service analysis of intersections and networks;
  • gain a good knowledge of SIDRA INTERSECTION methods for analysis of roundabouts, signals and two-way sign control;
  • gain a good understanding of the unique lane-based intersection and network modeling used in SIDRA INTERSECTION.
  • gain a good knowledge of network modelling (network data preparation and analysis) with different intersection types and movement classes using SIDRA INTERSECTION;
  • gain a good understanding of how lane blockage and capacity constraint as well as estimation of upstream and downstream lane flows and lane changes apply for networks of signalized and unsignalised intersections;
  • gain a good knowledge of network timing analysis methods including network cycle time and signal offset calculations for signal coordination, timings for Common Control Groups, and lane-based second-by-second platoon patterns including lane changes and platoon dispersion;
  • learn about the program-determined Extra Bunching values for roundabouts and two-way sign controlled intersections with upstream signalized intersections;
  • learn about how excess back of queue will be passed on to upstream continuous lanes to allow for queue blockage from a downstream intersection to apply to intersections further upstream;
  • be able to use various SIDRA INTERSECTION facilities effectively, including the use of movement classes, design life analysis, sensitivity analysis, signal timing analysis, network modelling, and Routes for performance calculations and signal offsets; and
  • gain a good understanding of SIDRA INTERSECTION output including the capacity, performance estimation, timing analysis and network analysis results.

This two-day SIDRA INTERSECTION workshop provides an interactive learning opportunity with hands-on computer experience, working together with instructors through many examples. The level of the workshop is Intermediate to Advanced.

The SIDRA INTERSECTION workshops are not just about roundabout, other intersection and network analysis, but aim to improve general understanding of operational analysis of all traffic facilities. It is important to learn about model calibration as an important element of realistic modelling of traffic facilities.

The SIDRA INTERSECTION Two-Day Training Workshop will cover modeling of all types of intersection (roundabouts, traffic signals, two-way sign control as well as pedestrian crossings) and network modeling.

Network modeling topics will include Network Configuration, Lane Movements, Network Flows (upstream and downstream flows, inflow and outflow, midblock lane changes), Lane Blockage and Capacity Constraint, Network timings (Cycle Time, Phase Times and Signal Offsets) for signal coordination, Common Control Groups for intersections operating under one signal controller, signal platoon model, Routes for performance output and for signal Offset calculations, Site, Network and Route output reports and displays, and Network and Route output comparison facilities. Freeway interchange and other paired intersection examples will be included as network model applications.
