Q1 Can we use several FLOATING licence packs together on one server? For example, will two 10-licence packs deployed on the same server act with the same functionality as a 20-licence pack?
Yes, several FLOATING licence packs can work side by side on the same server effectively adding the number of licences available.
Q2 Can we use several FLOATING licence packs on different servers and allow a user to obtain a licence from any one of these servers? In other words, if we install two FLOATING licence packs on Servers A and B, will a user automatically connect to Server B when server A’s licenses are fully used?
No, only one server location can be specified in the Client Application (SIDRA INTERSECTION or SIDRA TRIP). If you wish to allow a user to access licences from several FLOATING licence packs, we suggest that you pool those FLOATING licences in the same folder on one server and allow all users to access this folder.
Q3 Can I run SIDRA INTERSECTION on a laptop when it is not connected to our local network?
Under the FLOATING licence system, the software cannot be used on a computer that is not connected to your network. If you wish to use the software on laptop computers that are taken away from the office, you will need to purchase SINGLE licences for these computers.
Q4 We often take a laptop with SIDRA INTERSECTION installed for demonstration to clients. It is my understanding that this and any other use of the software outside of the office network such as working remotely would be problematic with a FLOATING licence.
If you are concerned about the reliability of your system to access your FLOATING licence remotely, we suggest that you obtain SINGLE licences for off-line use. These licences will be additional to a FLOATING licence pack.
Q5 Our office has a FLOATING licence available through our local network access. I have a SINGLE Licence installed on my computer which is for my off-line use. Will my session using SIDRA INTERSECTION reduce the FLOATING licences available for other users?
No, the FLOATING and SINGLE licences are set up differently. A SINGLE licence will not know the network address where the FLOATING licence resides. So there will not be any interaction between these two licence types.
Q6 Our office has one FLOATING 10-licence pack and 2 SINGLE licences. Can I install 2 SINGLE licences on the server side by side with the FLOATING licences so that I can allow a total of 12 licences available to our users?
No, the licensing system will not allow this. The FLOATING and SINGLE licences are set up differently, and there is no interaction between these two licence types. The SINGLE licence is installed on the end user's computer, i.e. on the same computer as the Client Application. There is no mechanism to install a SINGLE licence on a server.
Q7 We have 10 users at 3 sites of our organisation. We are considering obtaining one FLOATING 10-Licence pack. We want to use this centrally to serve up to 10 users at 3 sites. Is this possible?
It is a feasible arrangement for a central location to serve several sites via a WAN link, and is allowable under our licensing conditions. However, it is important to understand that the ability to use the software in this manner will depend on the reliability of your inter-office links. It will be your responsibility to make this arrangement work in a way which is satisfactory to remote users. If you are not sure about the reliability of a WAN arrangement, you should consider obtaining several SINGLE and FLOATING licence packs to be used at local sites.
Q8 We are considering obtaining 7 SINGLE licences for users at 2 sites of our organisation. Can we change these licences to FLOATING licence at a later time?
Organisations who want to obtain a licence for several sites with a small total number of users may be better suited to SINGLE licences (seven SINGLE licences in this case) if they are not sure about the effectiveness of a FLOATING licence for remote sites using a WAN arrangement.
Q9 How much data needs to be read from or written to the server for a standard user session? Is it just the licence management that requires access to a shared folder or are there other data or applications accessed from the shared folder as well?
The shared folder is for licence control only. The application and its data reside on the user’s computer and are not accessed from the shared folder. When a client application (e.g. SIDRA INTERSECTION) is run by a user, it will read the status of the license file. It will create a semaphore file on the shared folder. The semaphore file is opened and held open in a locked state for each user who runs the client application and is allocated a licence. There is no application data written to semaphore files. After the user exits the client application, the semaphore file allocated to that session will be deleted. The amount of data transferred during these processes is very small and should have no impact on your network or server performance.
Q10 What happens in the situation where a user in a remote office is allocated a licence to use the client application when the VPN link goes down or the bandwidth gets maxed out for some other reason? Does the remote user have to abort his session? How does the licence get released for another user?
If there is a network connection problem, the data processing functions of the application software will not be available after a 10-minute grace period. After the grace period, some other functions of the software will continue to be available even though the connection is not restored. The licence will become available for other users when such a connection problem occurs. If the end user reconnects to the network, normal operation would resume if a licence is available.
Q11 Can we track SIDRA licence usage by user?
The licence manager program on the server will help to track the number of users currently using the application software. Such information as computer names of specific users will also be available.
Q12 What are the specific server requirements?
See FLOATING Licence System Requirements
Q13 In clients applications accessing a common folder, is there a drive mapping that is required, or is all that is needed is file rights to this server\volume\folder?
The preferred addressing style is \\server\volume\folder. However, whichever is used, the address should be consistent. For the Licence File, users should be allowed to Read, Write and Modify. Users should be allowed to Create, Delete, Read, Write and Modify a file in the shared folder, which will contain the semaphore files.
Q14 Is the client application configured to point to a license folder? UNC pathing?
User needs to set where the licence file and the shared folder are. UNC pathing is preferred.
Q15 Can use my licence in another office of my organisation in a different country?
Licences can be used in any site (office) of the Licensee's organisation in the country for which the licence is issued. In the case of multi-national organisations, purchase of additional licences or a special agreement is required for other countries where the Licensee's organisation has offices. This applies to all licence types.
