“Traffic models in the era of big data”
Presented by Dr Nagui M. Rouphail [USA]

SIDRA SOLUTIONS presents another edition of ‘Exploring Models’, an annual event with guest speakers from the traffic and transport engineering industry from around the world.

This is a FREE event, but registration is required via our Eventbrite page

We have invited Dr Nagui M. Rouphail to present an overview of the use of big data in the transportation and traffic modelling fields. He is an internationally recognised scholar in the areas of highway capacity and operations, traffic simulation and intelligent transport systems, and the interface of traffic flow and air quality. He was a major research contributor and co-author of several chapters in the 2000, 2010 and 2016 editions of the US Highway Capacity Manual. Dr Rouphail is currently Professor of Civil Engineering at North Carolina State University, USA.

During his 35+ year academic career he has chaired theses and dissertation committees for over 55 graduate students. He has published over one-hundred and sixty refereed journal articles, including winning ten best paper awards from TRB, ASCE and ITE.

Dr Nagui M. Rouphail served as Director of the Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) at North Carolina State University, a post he held from January 2002 through August 2016. Dr Rouphail also holds the rank of Professor in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) at North Carolina State University. Previously he was Assistant and Associate Professor at the University of Illinois in Chicago.

Topic: “Traffic models in the era of big data”

There are numerous and sometimes conflicting definitions of the term “Big Data” in the public domain. A useful definition found in Wikipedia refers to the use of predictive analytics, user behaviour analytics, or certain other advanced data analytics methods that extract value from data, and seldom to a particular size of data set. In the traffic modelling area, that is probably the most appropriate definition of how it is applied in the field.

This presentation titled “Traffic models in the era of big data”, will provide an overview of the use of big data in the transportation and traffic modelling fields. It highlights the timeline shifts in traffic data monitoring which began with an almost exclusive focus on infrastructure observations in the 1960’s and 70’s (e.g. fixed sensors), moving to individual vehicle monitoring in the 80’s and 90’s (e.g. AVL, GPS), to individual travellers nowadays (e.g. Mobile Phones and Tablets).
